Afraid Of Valentine's Day
I know it has been Valentine's day, but it made me laugh when I read the news about the fear of Valentine's Day in Saudi Arabia:
The shopowners, especially giftshops and florists received an official letter with the warning of the consequences of selling anything red or with cupids or hearts on Valentine's Day
Even red ribbon, red wrapping paper is banned on that day.
The ministry cited a fatwa that describes it as "a Christian, pagan holiday that Muslims are not permitted to celebrate, or even acknowledge."

Geert Wilders' Party Second Biggest In Latest Polls
The row over the banning of anti-immigration MP Geert Wilders from entering Britain last week has not boosted the popularity of his PVV party greatly, according to the latest online poll by Maurice de Hond.
The populist PVV would win 25 seats (!) in the 150-seat parliament if an election was held now, just two more than a week ago. The party currently has nine MP's
The two extra seats come from the main government partners, the Christian Democrats (CDA) and Labour, who both lost one each in the latest opinion poll. This makes the PVV the second biggest party after the CDA.

Gang-Raped Woman Sentenced To Prison, And 100 Lashes
Saudi Arabia: A gang-raped woman (23) has been condemned to one year in prison and 100 lashes.
In Saudi Arabia you're not a victim when you become pregnant after sexual violence but you are
"guilty of adultery" and "having accepted a ride from a stranger"...

Swedish Skier Beaten In Gulmarg On Holy Words
Protests erupted in Gulmarg today with irate local groups beating up a foreign skier after his sledge was found to be inscribed with holy verses.
Reports said that people spotted the kalima-e-tayyaba, or the basic creed of Islam, inscribed over the bottom of the ski sledge of one Hans Patrick, a skier who had come all the way from Sweden to enjoy the slopes of Gulmarg.
Locals in Tangmarg and Gulmarg erupted in protest, and some groups pounced on the tourist, beating him up.
But the foreigner was rescued by the police who took him under their custody.
The skier, who had been staying in a private hut for the past 10 days, was a part of a group brought here by the Israeli travel agency, EDOO, which has been operating Gulmarg tours for the past several years.
The locals also staged protest against the police for its failure to register a case on the tourist.
Meanwhile, an official spokesman here said that the sticker carrying the holy words had been given to the tourist by his wife, who is a Qatari Muslim, for his protection, but he had unknowingly used it incorrectly.
"Kashmiris overwhelmingly welcome the arrival of foreign tourists in Kashmir and such incidents are almost unheard of but in this incident ignorance had led to offending local sensibilities", said Babar Khan of Lake City Tours and Travels.

Dutch MP Wilders Refused Entry To The UK
"A threat to public order"
Dutch Right-wing politician and controversial anti-Islam campaigner Geert Wilders has been refused entry to the United Kingdom despite being invited to visit by a member of the House of Lords, the British parliament's upper chamber.
Mr Wilders, who was due to go to London this Thursday, received a letter today, 10 February, from the British ambassador to the Netherlands telling him that he was not welcome, reportedly because his visit would constitute a threat to public order.
Mr Wilders responded to the decision in fighting mood, telling Dutch media that he still intended to travel to London:
"I'll see what happens at the border. Let them put me in handcuffs."
Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen's response was also firm. He contacted his UK counterpart, David Miliband, by telephone and voiced his dissatisfaction that a member of the Dutch parliament - Geert Wilders is in fact also the leader of a political grouping, The Freedom Party - has been prohibited from entering a fellow European Union member state.
Invited
Geert Wilders, perhaps best known outside the Netherlands for having made the video Fitna, in which the religion Islam and its holy book the Qur'an are Islam attacked as providing a basis for terrorist attacks and for the undermining of western democracy and values, had been invited to London for a showing of this film to members of the British parliament.
The invitation to do so was extended to the controversial Dutch politician by a member of the unelected House of Lords.
Regrettable
Mr Verhagen commented regarding the showing of Fitna in the British parliament that this was a matter for the House of Lords to decide on, but added: "The fact that a Dutch parliamentarian is refused entry to another EU country is highly regrettable."
Geert Wilders was initially to have shown his video to the British parliament in January, but those plans were cancelled following fierce protests from the UK's Muslim community.
(Again the leader of one of the biggest parties of the Netherlands has to be silence, like the voters and members of this party who indirectly are being disadvantaged with this mistreat.
And as always: the people with the biggest mouths are getting it their way again.)
